Flight engineer and gunner, B-17. 35 missions , 8th Air Force
OCTOBER MEETING SUMMARY:
Howard Claflin, B17 pilot in the 385th Bomber Group, 8th Air Force, Europe.
Howard spoke briefly about his 15 missions over Germany including the mission
to the railroad yard in Hamm when he was shot down.
He told mostly about his
life as a POW and the sometimes hostile attitude of the German civilians to
captured airmen. He almost died on the forced 7 day march in the winter of 1944
from a camp in east Germany to avoid the advance of the Russians. He was
liberated from the POW camp at Moosburg by the US 3rd Army troops under Patton.
Attendance was 104.

FIFTH ANNIVERSARY PHOTOS :
At the October 2006 meeting group photographs were taken of 41 WWII veterans
and 17 Korean War veterans as part of the ceremonies commemorating the 5th anniversary of our
roundtable. To date 24 and 14, respectively of these photos have been claimed.
The remaining 8x10 color pictures will be available free of charge at all
future meetings for the 20 veterans who have yet to acquire theirs.
2007 THEME: “Bring Two
Veterans”. Personally bring 2 veterans and their families with you to our
meetings.
VHP: (Veterans History
Project) Report. Do you want to tape your wartime experiences? Contact Jerri
Donohue (440 546 1207) to make arrangements. If you know of any veteran
reunions in Ohio coming up please call Jerri so she can attend and get some of
these veterans to record their stories.

volunteer yourself or to recommend others.
